A good remake is 11 to 20 years after the original, except for Naughty Dog

After the fashion for remasters, studios have launched into video game remakesnot always so old, in order to introduce titles to new players with improved graphics and a gameplay refined. A study of Virtuos Games And IDG Consulting and Strategic Game Consulting looked into this phenomenon of remakes, with interesting figures.

More than 200 remakes released since 2012 were scrutinized, with the emphasis placed on sales. A graph sums up the market well: for a remake to sell well, it must be released between 11 and 20 years after the original. 70% of remakes released between 11 and 15 years after the base game sold more than two million copies, a figure that rises to 80% for titles released 16 to 20 years after the original. However, you shouldn’t expect too much, because 32% of remakes released 21 to 25 years after the original game reach two million sales, undoubtedly the fault of a forgotten franchise. Say that Microids just announced a remake of The Amerzone: The Explorer’s Testament 25 years later…

It is still necessary to note a few exceptions, the adventure game of Microids will perhaps be part of it, the study cites The Last of Us Part I and Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (released 9 years after the originals) as titles having exceeded two million sales. The study affirms in passing that a good remake must take maximum advantage of the new hardware and correct the frustrating elements of the original, while adding real value to the basic experience.
