A heavy fine awaits French motorists who do not respect this new road sign

Since a decree of August 24, 2020, motorists must respect this new road sign, mainly located on the roads of large cities, under penalty of a heavy fine.

Be careful, if you are driving in large cities such as Lyon (Rhône), Grenoble (Isère), Nantes (Loire-Atlantique) or Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), do not be surprised if you come across this new road sign, square in shape with a white diamond on a blue background. This sign, which was validated on August 29, 2020 by the Official Journal and introduced by the Climate and Resilience law of 2021, consists of “materializing a lane reserved for public transport vehicles, taxis, vehicles carrying a minimum number of occupants including the driver, particularly in the context of carpooling within the meaning of article L.3132-1 of the transport code or very low emission vehicles within the meaning of article L.318-1 of the transport code road”.

Be careful, this traffic sign is only activated if traffic increases in Lille, unlike in Lyon, where the reserved lane is activated from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. During these activation periods, the current left lane becomes the reserved lane, and signage limits the speed to 50 km/h. In Strasbourg, lanes dedicated to carpooling are set up during the week, from Monday to Friday, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. In the event of non-compliance with this signage, motorists are exposed to a fine of 135 euros.

Very low emission vehicles, … who is affected by this new traffic sign?

The panel concerns very low emission vehicles (VTFE), whose energy source is one of the following energy sources: EL (electricity), H2 (hydrogen), HE (hydrogen-electricity, plug-in hybrid) , HH (hydrogen electricity, non-rechargeable hybrid), AC (compressed air)”.

As indicated in the decree of August 24, 2020, the sign concerns “vehicles carrying a minimum number of occupants, including the driver, particularly in the context of carpooling”. As a reminder, carpooling is defined “as the joint use of a motorized land vehicle by a driver and one or more passengers, carried out without payment, except for the sharing of costs, as part of a trip that the driver carries out on his own account. Their connection, for this purpose, can be carried out for a fee.”.

Carpooling, a more economical and ecological solution

This measure particularly contributes to the development of carpooling, which has many advantages. According to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, carpooling allows you to “increase your purchasing power”, “participate in improving air quality” and “move more freely ”, where there is little or no public transport.

Carpooling also has benefits for the community, starting with “reductions in public costs for communities”. It allows “a reduction in air pollution for metropolises”, “an example of territorial solidarity” and “the reduction of congestion and a gain in terms of parking”.
