Expected for 2025, the future Volkswagen ID.2 should then be available in a sportier version, which would sport the GTX or GTI badge. It should develop 226 horsepower, or even more power, although nothing has yet been confirmed.
If Germany and several other European countries refuse to ban the sale of thermal cars in 2035, manufacturers are still preparing for this deadline. This is notably the case of Volkswagen, which plans to stop the launch of new internal combustion models from 2026. Today, its electric range is already well expanded with the recently restyled ID.3 as well as the ID.4 and ID.5, not to mention the ID. buzz.
A new GTI or GTX version
But the manufacturer does not want to rest on its laurels. Last January, he indeed lifted the veil on his future ID.7 at the CES in Las Vegas. A few days ago, it was the turn of the ID.2all concept to take its first steps. The latter foreshadows a future compact and affordable electric car, below 25,000 euros. A mix between a Polo and a Golf.
If the manufacturer has unveiled the technical sheet of this new concept, we do not yet know the details. the production version, scheduled for 2025. But now a Volkswagen spokesperson tells us a little more. Interviewed by journalists from topgear, Kai Grünitz, member of the brand’s board of directors in charge of technical development had a few things to say.
And the latter could not have been clearer, since he stated bluntly that ” we are working on a sports version“. It therefore leaves no doubt on the matter. However, we do not know if this one will bear the name of GTX or GTI, while the manufacturer would like to revive this badge on its electric models. As a reminder, the sports range of the ID family is currently made up of the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX.
But that’s not the only thing we learn from Kai Grünitz, who says the car will be ” front-wheel drive, not all-wheel drive. He is pointing out that “I have a figure in mind for the power, but it will be a surprise“. As a reminder, the concept boasts no less than 226 horsepowerbut nothing has been said yet about the production model, which could be a little less powerful.
Rising power?
It is also not to be excluded even more impressive figures, which could allow the standard ID.2 to approach a Golf GTI thermal. For the record, the basic version has a power of 245 horsepower. On the other hand, it is unlikely that the compact electric will take over the traction chain of the ID.5 GTX that we were able to test, with 299 horsepower.
In effect, this would require the addition of a second motor on the front axle, which is not at all intended by the manufacturer. As a reminder, the concept achieves 0 to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds, while the maximum speed, of 160 km/h, is limited in order to preserve the 56 kWh battery and autonomy, displayed at 450 kilometers. according to the WLTP cycle.

This future Volkswagen ID.2 could also change its name to take that of ID. Golf. It would compete with the Dacia Spring as well as the electric Renault 5, while it will compete with the future city car from Alpine based on that of the diamond mark.
That’s not all, because the constructor would also work on an ID. 100% electric Tiguan. An even more affordable city car, displayed below the 20,000 euro mark would also be in the boxes but no precise launch date has yet been announced.
