A horrifying Jurassic Park! 65 – the Earth before is the blockbuster not to be missed with Adam Driver

On the occasion of the release of “65 – the Earth before”, here are five things to know about this blockbuster worn by Adam Driver.

What is it about ? After a terrible crash on an unknown planet, the pilot Mills quickly discovers that he was actually stranded on Earth… 65 million years ago. To succeed in their only chance of rescue, Mills and Koa, the only other survivor of the crash, must fight their way through unknown lands populated by dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight for their survival.

From the creators of “A Quiet Place”

65 – The Land Before is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who scripted the lucrative A Quiet Place. On the staging side, we owe them the horror film Haunt. They explain : “We love genre cinema. Horror, suspense, action, adventure – that’s the magic combo for us. And what we love even more is combining a genre film with a good dose of suspense and characters you really relate to.”

The blockbuster is also produced by Sam Raimi, a big name in the horror genre since his debut with Evil Dead (1981). The latter confides: “What captivated me the most was that the father-daughter relationship between Mills and Koa is at the center of the film. Koa is brave and intelligent, and she defies Mills. Together, they try to survive. And even if it’s Mills who saves Koa first, it’s Koa who saves him in the end. Like in a fairy tale.”

Realistic dinosaurs

To design the dinosaurs, the production brought in Neville Page, who worked on Avatar, Star Trek and Tron. Visual effects supervisor Chris Harvey says: “We wanted to give shape to realistic dinosaurs while filming them in such a way as to bring out the horror in the scenes. We gave each of these creatures very tangible real elements, a kind of background. For example, the ‘big bad’ is very emaciated: he is more worn, scarred by past battles.”

The budget for 65 – the Earth Before is estimated at $90 million. This is the most expensive film that Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have worked on. For comparison, A Quiet Place cost $17 million.

Despite this high cost, the directors opted for a minimalist approach of showing as little as possible and suggesting the threat: “We had a motto: the main thing in suspense is what you don’t see.”

“A bit like in A Quiet Place and Jaws. The idea that there is something dangerous and mysterious out there, in this environment where the characters are forced to evolve”confide Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.

Filming in the forest

65 – The Land Before was shot in the vast forests of Oregon, including Golden Falls. A great place to create epic scenes. The director of photography Salvatore Totino (Everest, Bird Box, etc.), accustomed to lighting this kind of natural places, remembers:

“It was a challenge: some of the shots were really complex to do, and we were in places where it was not easy to work, in the middle of the trees or in the marshes. One of the challenges was also to know how we were going to light up this vast area at night, in a way that would make it both spooky and mysterious”. The shooting of the film lasted 40 days.
