Cyberpunk 2077 has just deployed its huge 2.0 update which is already revealing some big secrets. Here’s what we can learn. Explanations.
The wait was long, but the big moment has finally arrived. Update 2.0 for Cyberpunk 2077 is available, aiming to prepare for the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion. But in addition to the DLC rich in content, the patch itself is particularly extensive, notably concealing a nice secret.
Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 has a secret
We knew it, update 2.0 is huge. It notably introduces a completely revised and corrected skill system, a cybernetic improvement, new management of armor and statistics, a more robust police force and numerous various improvements. The game now looks better and is more visually impressive. But that’s not all, 2.0 also adds a secret: a pronounced nod to Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Warning, if you have not seen the Netflix series, the following lines contain a spoiler.
It was Twitter user SynthPotato who first spotted the information. If you head to North Oak in Westbrook once you’re in Night City, you might find a moving memorial to David Martinez of the Edgerunners. Those who have seen the Cyberpunk 2077 anime know that David is brutally killed by Adam Smasher. Thus, CD Projekt Red decided to play on the heartstrings by creating a commemorative space in his honor. We can say that this rubs salt in the wound.
A very touching tribute to the Edgerunners series
Plus, the memorial becomes even more touching when you read the description. It states: “You didn’t take me to the moon, but you were there with me”, suggesting that it was Lucy who erected the memorial for David. Sensitive souls will undoubtedly have a little tear when discovering this place.
The presence of references to Edgerunners in Cyberpunk 2077 is not really surprising. First, the two works are set in the same universe, so the actions of David, Lucy and the rest of the gang would obviously have been felt in Night City. It should also be mentioned that the anime was incredibly popular when it first aired, attracting many new fans to the series who might have otherwise ignored the game. For those newcomers discovering the RPG with update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty, fall on nods to Edgerunners will probably be very satisfying.
It’s always nice to see these kinds of additions when you’re a fan of a work. In the same spirit, but in the other direction, we remember the references to Star Wars games in recent series on Disney+. Notably the presence of a speeder well known to players of the late Star Wars Galaxies (the AV-21) and the presence of Starkiller’s armor in Andor. Fan service is always a good opportunity to delight fans and get them in their pockets.
For the record, the Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC will be released on September 26, 2023. So there isn’t much time left to wait.
