According to new information, Naughty Dog is preparing the return of The Last of Us. The announcement could also take place in the coming days.
UPDATE 11/18: it’s now confirmed, The Last of Us 2 Remastered PS5 will arrive at the start of the year with a slew of new features.
After the first three Uncharted, Nathan Drake took a little rest to allow a masterpiece to blossom: The Last of Us. A memorable game, still today, and which returned in 2022 as part of a remake PS5. Its sequel, TLOU 2, was not entitled to the same treatment but the Dogs probably have a secret project which is no longer really a secret.
A TLOU announcement approaching?
Neil Druckmann himself admitted, The Last of Us 3 will perhaps be one of Naughty Dog’s future games. The screenwriter, creative director and vice-president of the studio, wrote the outline of the screenplay with Halley Gross (Westworld). The studio’s next game? “As for Naughty Dog’s next game, I can’t say anything. My communications director there is going to massacre me. A decision has been made. I can’t say what it is, but we thought about different things and chose the one that excited us the most » said Druckmann in various interviews.
Maybe the future game will be TLOU 3 or maybe it will be a completely new IP. In any case, before that, the Dogs should release The Last of Us 2 Remastered on PS5. Originally, it was Gustavo Santaolalla, the composer of the franchise, who released this information. According to him, a “a new version of the game” arrives and we can meet his avatar again to ask him to play in-game music. Last month, artist Mark Pajarillo updated his LinkedIn profile to indicate that he had worked on TLOU Part 1… but also on The Last of Us 2 Remastered. A blunder? This mention no longer appears on his page.
Today, a new clue still affirms that TLOU 2 Remastered is very real. In a message on X, the PlayStationSize account tweeted an image of the game with the words PS5 and “alert” and “confirmed” icons. According to them, Sony has registered this new version in the PlayStation Store database.
The Last of Us 2 Remastered PS5 and PC at the Game Awards 2023?
Tom Henderson, one of the few trusted insiders, was able to verify the information on his side. Sony has started to prepare the ground for this new version of The Last of Us 2. A remaster? To do what ? Many are indeed asking this question given that the game is just to die for in its PlayStation 4 version, even today.
The game does not have a native PS5 version, but a free performance patch has been available for several months. The main advantage is being able to play at 60fps. “Once patch 1.08 for The Last of Us Part II is installed on PS5, you will find an option in Display that will allow you to set the target frame rate to 30 or 60 FPS. You’ll be able to choose the frame rate you prefer, to complement the other improvements brought by backward compatibility of PS4 games on PS5, like better resolution, faster loading times, and more ».
Besides interactivity with Gustavo Santaolalla, what could The Last of Us 2 Remastered PS5 contain? Much more graphical improvements, and perhaps even more content. As with each title, scenes and content passages were cut along the way. Often deliberate cuts to remove something that doesn’t work, for example. Naughty Dog could then perhaps extend sequences or ultimately reverse certain decisions by incorporating abandoned ideas. But the other goal of a re-release would also be to offer a PC version. The Last of Us Part 1 is available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, but not its sequel.
