The Nintendo Switch 2 once again promises to be a huge technological evolution compared to its predecessor, for the pleasure of our eyes.
Thanks to a much more robust technical sheet than its big sister, the Nintendo Switch 2 will clearly offer a colossal technological leap for its future fans. A console finally up to date, particularly with regard to support for the most recent graphics technologies such as Unreal Engine 5. A portable graphics buff in perspective, if we are to believe the expert analysts at Digital Foundry, despite necessarily some sacrifices.
An “Unreal” technological leap on the Nintendo Switch 2…
After a host of rumors and more recently leaks around its design and that of the Joy-Con, the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has almost no secrets to hide, barring last minute surprises. We expect a hybrid console that is certainly less powerful than the PS5 and Xbox Series, but with properties equivalent to the very popular Steam Deck. Regarding performance, the machine should in any case be significantly better off than its predecessor thanks to DLSS support, an NVIDIA chip under the hood requires.
This is not the only popular modern technology that the Nintendo Switch 2 should support. According to Digital Foundry, it would be able to run games on the Unreal Engine 5 with all its features such as Nanite, Lumen , Virtual Shadow Maps and probably even the recently presented and stunning MegaLights technology. This is explained by the fact that the first Switch of the name supports games created on the Unreal Engine 4. It is therefore a logical continuation, the developers are now actively working on the latest version of the Epic engine.
…but necessarily with some concessions
However, this exciting prospect should be tempered. Despite a significantly improved technical sheet, the Nintendo Switch 2 will not be able to decently display games under Unreal Engine 5 as well as a PS5/PS5 Pro or an Xbox Series. Some concessions will necessarily be expected. However, developers may adapt the functionality of Epic’s engine to the console’s hardware. There is in fact almost no doubt that the Nintendo Switch 2 has a bright future ahead of it, due to its hybrid nature and its enormous catalog of prestigious exclusive licenses.
Studios would therefore have every interest in properly optimizing their games so that they run as best as possible on the latter. Even if for the moment these are simple speculations on the part of Digital Foundry, on paper they appear to be entirely plausible. However, we will have to wait for the much-watched release of the Nintendo Switch 2, a priori scheduled between March and April 2025, at a price estimated between 400 and 500 euros, to be sure.
