a huge update is coming, it’s very heavy

The PS5 will test a new update to its software which will welcome new rather useful features. This concerns the technical capacity of the machine as well as its social component and its accessibility.

The PS5 is regularly updated with new features to ensure an optimal user experience. Without warning, Sony is preparing a new patch for our machines with a ton of new features in its wake that will be able to be tested in advance by some players.
Usually, updates just fix a few glitches here and there while making everything more stable and efficient. But it also happens that some patches are more substantial and add new features altogether. This is the case today with the new big patch which will be deployed little by little for all participants in the beta program. Once again, this testing of the update is by invitation only at the moment and will soon be rolled out to the general public.

A big PS5 update and a ton of new stuff

This next update does not do things by halves since it affects practically everything. The PS5 is opening up to new peripherals in order to become even more malleable, and the console is also becoming even more accessible with the addition of new, well-regarded accessibility options. Finally, the hub will also be updated and new features are expected for the games.

New peripherals, audio and storage, compatible.

Among the highlights of this update, we can notably note the support for a whole range of Dolby Atmos compatible devices to enjoy a sound experience with small onions and even to use Tempest 3D technology. Still on the tech side, the PS5 will be able to accommodate a new range of M.2 SSDs in order to extend the storage limit beyond the previous restrictions. Perfect for installing a plethora of games from the PS Plus Extra.

Support for new Dolby Atmos compatible devices

  • 3D audio through Tempest 3D sound technology is now compatible with all Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices (such as soundbars, TVs, or home theaters)
    • To enable Dolby Atmos, go to [Paramètres] > [Son] > [Sortie audio] > [Format audio (Priorité)]then select [Dolby Atmos].

New compatible SSDs

  • The PS5 will be able to accommodate a new range of M.2 SSDs up to 8 TB. Until now, the limit was set at a maximum storage of 4 TB. As a reminder, not all SSDs are necessarily compatible (on paper) be sure to check compatibility before purchasing.

The PS5 becomes even more accessible!

Accessibility is also at the center of this new update with the addition of options allowing you to browse the menus with ease. You can now connect and configure a second controller as a support pad, but also activate a haptic effect in the menus in order to “feel” the elements directly via the Dualsense. Options which can of course be coupled with those already in place in the PS5 system.

Using a second controller as assistance (on the hub or in game)

  • Now you can assign a second controller to an account to use as an assist controller. You can then use these two controllers to control your PS5 console as if you were using a single controller.
    • To use an assist controller, go to [Paramètres] > [Accessibilité] > [Manettes] > [Utiliser une seconde manette comme assistance]then enable the option [Utiliser une manette d’assistance].

System interface haptic feedback

  • You can enable haptic feedback effects while you navigate your PS5 menus using your controller.
    • To enable this feature, go to [Paramètres] > [Accessibilité] > [Manettes]then enable the option [Retour haptique lors de la navigation dans la console].

Additional Hub Options and Party Changes

Finally, the social aspect of the machine has not been forgotten since some new features have also come here to join the party, although the modifications are a little less striking here. The update will therefore include a revisit of the game interface which will now allow players to be invited to join a closed game without having to do 50 manipulations as before, or the addition of a preview when a participant a party initiates a screen share; it will then be possible to quickly see his screen even before joining the game.

Party UI update

  • You can now invite a player to join a closed party without having to automatically add the player in question to the group or create a new group. Players can now send party invites to groups and not just to individual players.

Using emoji to react to messages

  • You can add reactions to messages using emojis, which facilitate communication with your friends (like on Discord or Messenger)

Overview of Screen Sharing

  • If a player is sharing their screen in a party you can join, you’ll see a preview of their Screen Share before you even join.

Simplified access to your friends’ game sessions

  • You can see among your friends those who carry out an activity in which you can participate through the tab [Amis].
    • The Joinable icon appears next to friends playing a game that you can join.
    • You can join a friend’s game by pressing the options key, then selecting [Rejoindre le jeu]or by selecting the “Join” button on their profile card.

Game Center Tournaments

  • In the game center, you can see how many tournaments you are participating in and your best ranking, as well as the start date and time of the next one.

Find games in your library

  • You can now search for games in your game library.

Game Aid Improvements

  • Game Aid cards have been improved.
    • You can now see currently available activities, previously available ones, as well as upcoming and completed ones.
    • If you select a map, its details are displayed on the right side, making it easier to find its objectives and corresponding clues.

Help with new PS5 features

  • Browse helpful tips to get the most out of your PS5 and learn about new features in the all-new Discover Tips section.
    • Go to [Paramètres] > [Guide et conseils, sécurité et santé, et autres informations] > [Guide et conseils]then select [Découvrez des conseils] to view all tips.

Mute PS5 beeps

  • You can mute or adjust the volume of the PS5 beeps when you turn it on, turn it off, or put it into rest mode.
    • Go to [Paramètres] > [Système] > [Bips].
      • To adjust the beep volume, select [Volume].
      • To mute the beeps, enable the option [Mettre en sourdine les bips].

The update will be rolled out gradually to all participants in the beta program. If you are one of them, watch your emails. You will then receive an invitation offering to try these new features before anyone else. This massive update will be rolled out to the general public later.
