a joyful thriller with assumed bad taste

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – NOT TO BE MISSED

Let us be careful not to foolishly believe in appearances. The man sitting on the toilet seat, magazine in his hands, underpants on his ankles, whom we become very intimately acquainted with from the first shot of the film, does not only submit to the trivial work usually assigned to these places. It applies to the manufacture of a massive weapon, determining for the continuation of the events.

To this end, a plastic bag has been carefully placed around the bowl to collect the turds.. Everything has been so well thought out and prepared that the plan does not take long to bear fruit. The fishing is successful, and the guy is satisfied. The voice-over (with a strong Brussels accent) tells us that our man is called Francis, that he is 48 years old and that, at this hour, part of his wife’s body is walking around in the trunk of a Maserati Biturbo model 1986.

So here we are in the know. And warned: scatological humor will be part of the feast. In the same way, we will quickly know, as sex, alcohol, drugs and hemoglobin. Here are some clear and direct paths. They announce a story of betrayal, revenge, wandering stiff. Consider an infinitesimal part of what awaits us in Music HoleUFO which comes to us from Belgium with, on board, a kind of creature which would have digested Fargo (1996), by the Coen brothers, Bad Cops (2013), by Quentin Dupieux, and Reservoir Dogs (1992), by Quentin Tarantino.

To the realization of this little miracle: David Mutzenmacher and Gaëtan Liekens – two troublemakers whose film, one imagines, that they were fed Magritte and André Breton, Tintin and Nietzsche, beer and corpses exquisite, with Baroque architecture and the caves of Lascaux. That is to say !

Their previous collaboration (which included a third partner, Alexandre Bouchet) gave birth to Jose, a short format released in 2014. Burlesque spirit, subversive humour, assumed bad taste, the Belgian spirit were already present, concentrated in twelve minutes. Eight years later, these same components flourish in a longer and crazy story, where little strikes, failed mafiosos, lost types, broken arms of genius, bodybuilt gigolo, old prostitute, sentimental young girls and overly talkative parrot intersect.

decapitated head

A world from which develops a plot without tail or head, whose narrative construction is to match, exploded, unstructured, and yet clear, perfectly understandable. Because David Mutzenmacher and Gaëtan Liekens are building a cinematographic thriller worthy of the name (the opportunity to quote the cinematographer, Bruno Degrave), by letting us believe in a huge mess. To give an overview, let’s go back to Francis (magnificent Wim Willaert) with whom, as we have seen, it all began.
