“A judicial farce”: Nicaragua begins a series of political trials

Barely three months after the disputed re-election of President Daniel Ortega, around 40 people, out of the 170 political prisoners imprisoned in the country, should be tried, in particular for “conspiracy”.

The repression of dissenting voices is increasingly brutal in Nicaragua. This Thursday, at the end of trials which were held almost behind closed doors in a prison in the capital Managua, the justice found guilty of “conspiracytwo opposition figures, ex-guerrilla Dora María Téllez and student leader Lesther Alemán. Their sentence has not yet been specified, but the prosecution has requested fifteen years in prison against the first, historian and former comrade in arms of President Daniel Ortega, with whom she participated in the Sandinista revolution in 1979. On Twitterthe Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights denounced a “judicial prank“.

These convictions are part of the series of lawsuits brought since Tuesday against political prisoners by the administration of Daniel Ortega, re-elected in November for a fourth term after a campaign distorted by multiple violations of public freedoms and the arrest of several potential candidates.
