A Lara Croft Adventure is set to land on Amazon Prime Video. The American magazine The Hollywood Reporter indicates in an article published on January 27 that a television series based on the Tomb Raider video game franchise is in production. Screenwriter and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emmy and Golden Globe winner for Fleabag, is said to be in charge. The specialized media Deadline confirms the information and indicates that an entire universe would potentially be in development with a film and a new video game at stake.
Few details around the development of this series, the project would only be at its beginning. Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been in high demand since the success of Amazon’s Fleabag series. As his initial three-year contract expired at the end of last year, sources say Amazon would do anything to renew the partnership. The screenwriter co-wrote the James Bond film No Time to Die and will appear on screen alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones 5.
Video game adaptations are on the rise: Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a hit, while HBO’s The Last of Us was just renewed for a second season after just two episodes. It is to be hoped that Amazon can bring a level of quality similar to that of these series.
Lara Croft has been adapted to the cinema three times, first interpreted by Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s and then Alicia Vikander in 2018. Tomb Raider at Amazon will have to compete with an adaptation of the game Horizon Zero Dawn, also in progress. And Jeff Bezos’ company isn’t the exclusive home of Tomb Raider news, as Netflix is also working on a Lara Croft anime.
