The man had been sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder committed several years earlier.

A simple photo from Google Maps that puts an end to 20 years on the run. Gioacchino Gammino, one of the heads of the Sicilian mafia group “Stidda”, has been spotted around Madrid in Spain, according to information from Reuters. Authorities re-launched an investigation into him two years ago when they identified his face in a photo taken by Google Maps.
The 60-year-old lived under a false name in the town of Galapagar, some 40 kilometers northwest of Madrid. A photo of the man on the run was taken outside a fruit store. An Italian police official said, however, that investigators already had doubts about his presence in this small Iberian town and that the Google Maps photo confirmed their suspicions.
” The photo allowed us to confirm the investigation that we were developing in a traditional way », Explains Nicola Altiero, Deputy Director of the Italian anti-mafia police unit. The fugitive, who escaped from prison in Rome in 2002, is currently in the hands of the Spanish authorities. He could be extradited by the end of February.
