And yes, it’s confirmed: Star Trek: Section 31, its official title, will be led by Michelle Yeoh who will reprise her role as Empress! The film will be a spin-off of the Star Trek: Discovery series, launched in 2017, which will begin broadcasting its fifth and final season on Paramount+ in early April. Thus, we will not need to say goodbye to the Empress Philippa Georgiou who will continue her little journey in the feature film.
A secret division…
Michelle Yeoh will therefore find the character she played for the first time in the inaugural season of Star Trek: Discovery. In the film, Empress Georgiou will join Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets. Star Trek: Section 31 was initially planned as a series before Paramount+ decided to turn the project into a film – a film written, among others, by screenwriter Craig Sweeny (Limitless) and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, who directed numerous episodes of Star Trek: Discovery.
Over the years, there have been numerous rumors and announcements regarding a wide variety of Star Trek films. There was the Quentin Tarantino project, which will never happen, or even the sequel to Star Trek Limitless with Chris Pine, who remains a mystery. A film set several centuries ago was also mentioned. It is finally Section 31 who wins!
On the casting side, Michelle Yeoh will be surrounded by Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal, Wayward Pines), Sam Richardson (Veep, Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim, Captain Marvel), Humberly González (Ginny & Georgia) and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).
Star Trek: Section 31 is expected to debut on Paramount+ sometime in 2025. As for Star Trek: Discovery, its final season will debut on April 4 on Paramount+. In the meantime, the rest of the films and series in the franchise can be found on the same platform.
