A Marilyn by Andy Warhol sold for 195 million dollars , Actualité/Actu Passion


One of the famous portraits of the platinum blonde Hollywood star painted by Andy Warhol has reached a new sales record: this painting by the American artist, which had been estimated at around 200 million euros, went to a few minutes at the high price of 195.04 million dollars on Monday, during a sale organized by Maison Christie’s.

This painting from 1964, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (visual of the article), from a still from Henry Hathaway’s film Niagara, far beats the artist’s previous record – which was $105.4 million for the work Silver Car Cash (Double Disaster).

A record for a 20th century work of art

But it is also the most expensive piece of 20th century art, surpassing the transaction of Women of Algiers of picassoa mythical painting by the Spanish artist sold for 179.4 million dollars in 2015, as well as the highest philanthropic auction after that of the collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller (832 million dollars).

The absolute record for a sale of a work of art, all periods combined, remains held by the Salvator Mundi of Leonardo da Vinci, gone to 450.3 million dollars in November 2017, and property of Prince Mohammed ben Salmane, according to the American intelligence services.

Charity sale

Proceeds from the sale of Shot Sage Blue Marilynproperty of the Thomas and Doris Amman Foundation, will be donated to a series of charities in favor of the education and health of children.

In recent years, the painting has appeared several times in the greatest museums of contemporary art in the world, such as the Guggenheim in New York, the Center Pompidou, the Tate in London, and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art.

Among his most iconic are the pop art portraits of actress Marylin Monroe, painted by Andy Warhol after his sudden death in 1962. They imposed the figure of the actress among the most popular American stars on the planet.

In 2021, a silkscreen print of nine Marylin images from the Macklowe collection fetched $47.4 million at a record auction organized by Sotheby’s.
