The Bordeaux town hall has decided to mark the occasion. On April 4, 2024, a football match will be played at the Stade Chaban-Delmas in Bordeaux to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this legendary venue. On this occasion, former Girondins will face the Variétés Club de France.

A legendary stadium will celebrate its hundredth anniversary. Next Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m., the Chaban-Delmas stadium in Bordeaux, formerly Parc Lescure, will celebrate its centenary by receiving distinguished guests. At the initiative of the city’s mayor Pierre Hurmic, the historic grounds of the Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux (FCGB) will host a prestigious meeting pitting the Variétés Club de France against a team made up of former FCGB players. The latter will be coached by an icon of the club, in the person of Alain Giresse. With 182 goals scored in 592 games, the former midfielder remains the top scorer in the history of the Bordeaux club.

From football to rugby

Inaugurated on March 30, 1924, this legendary enclosure has had several names, several owners and several residents. First called “Parc des sports” until 1938, then “Parc Lescure” until 2001, the stadium was finally named in honor of Jacques Chaban-Delmas, mayor of Bordeaux from 1947 to 1997.

From 1958 to 2015, the arena will become the official stadium of the Girondins de Bordeaux before their recent move to Matmut Atlantique. Since then, rugby players from the Union Bordeaux Bègles have made it their lair. Since its opening, the stadium has also hosted several international events such as two Football World Cup matches in 1938, six World Cup matches in 1998 and six Rugby World Cup matches in 1999 and 2007.
