a milestone in overclocking reached by Intel and Asus


Asus has set many new world records in the field of overclocking and with an Intel Core i9-13900KS, presented at CES 2023. For the first time, the 9 GHz barrier has been crossed.

It’s a challenge that’s been going on for ages. Asus has overclocked the recent CPU Intel Core i9-13900KS at a clock frequency of more than 9 GHz. This record was considered unattainable, the Taiwanese manufacturer achieved this performance during an internal overclocking event. And, it’s not a dud, like the one last year.

The Intel Core i9-13900K CPU had already been boosted to 8.8 GHz, which initially broke the AMD FX-8370 CPU record that had existed since 2014. Apparently, the Intel 7 (10 nm) engraving optimized through the Intel process N7 is particularly well suited for high clock frequencies under extreme conditions.

As a reminder, this Intel Core i9-13900K has 8 high-performance cores (P-Core) and 16 low-power cores (E-Core). We obviously find Hyperthreading on the P-Core, and thus 32 threads in total. Without overclocking, the base frequency of the P-Cores is 3 GHz. And, this CPU heats up a lot, its thermal envelope of 253 watts even requires it to be associated with a high-end AiO type active cooling system.

For this performance, Asus used the motherboard Maximus Z790 Apex. It has been a motherboard suitable for overclocking for several generations and, in addition to specific BIOS profiles, it also offers various special functions for cooling. Because without special settings, most processors simply won’t boot up or run at severe sub-zero temperatures.

However, this record was not won, because even under normal conditions, overclocking with liquid nitrogen requires great knowledge and work. The material must be well prepared in order to be protected from condensation, since at these temperatures the humidity of the air causes the formation of ice on the cold components. It can melt on hot components and cause shorts and corrosion. However, the 9 GHz record went further, thanks to liquid helium.

A total of 14 new world records and 29 new best values ​​in the benchmarks were reached, including a performance on PiFast in just 6.85 seconds and a new best performance in SuperPi with around three minutes.

Undoubtedly, as usual, this is both a feasibility study and a communication campaign designed by Asus and Intel to show the potential of upcoming products. We can thus discover the Intel Core i9-13900KS, which will be able to exceed 6 GHz with an efficient cooling system, this CPU should be available in early January 2023. Overclocking beyond this will certainly require an advanced cooling effort.
