a new entry-level version in preparation

Just arrived in Europe, it seems that the entry-level Tesla Model Y, called Propulsion, is already preparing to evolve drastically. Specifically, it would be the battery pack, which would evolve faster than expected, and the arrival of an all-wheel drive version.

The Tesla Model Y Propulsion has just arrived in Europe, and the first deliveries took place just a few days ago. Some owners are won over, while others show some disappointment with the removal of ultrasonic sensors in particular. Whatever, Tesla is apparently preparing two major evolutions for this entry-level Tesla Model Y for 2023For better or for worse.

A Tesla Model Y Propulsion on borrowed time?

We have already talked about it several times, but Tesla seems to have too much stock of Tesla Model Y Propulsion, especially in France. That could quickly be history, however, because this specific model may be end of life. In 2019, the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion Grande Autonomie suffered the same fate, being discontinued shortly after its launch on the old continent.

To replace this Tesla Model Y Propulsion – or to complete it, nothing is less certain -, teslarati reveals that a new variant has been submitted to the US environmental agency for certification in 2023. It is a Tesla Model Y standard range, all-wheel drive.

Behind this name hides what many expected, namely the arrival of the structural pack and 4680 cells on a Tesla Model Y, to reduce costs, mass and therefore increase autonomy. In addition to that, this new variant would abandon the single rear engine to embark two engines and switch from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive.

Price, availability date, capacity: many questions, few answers

As often at Tesla, there are more questions than answers regarding this new variant of Tesla Model Y. First of all, a Tesla Model Y with a structural battery pack in 4680 format already exists in the USA: manufactured at the gigafactory in Austin, Texas, it has been offered in small quantities for a few month. It is a propulsion version, which has a single rear engine.

It could then simply be a minor evolution of this model, which would see a second engine arrive at the front. In this way, Tesla would only offer all-wheel-drive versions in North America, and would abandon the Propulsion version hitherto offered in small quantities.

Finally, regarding the price of this Tesla Model Y with a structural pack and all-wheel drive, expect it to be more expensive than the Propulsion version currently on sale. That’s what Tesla has always done until now, leveling the lineup by number of motors, battery capacity, and performance. The Tesla Model Y Propulsion currently offered in France at 49,990 euros excluding the ecological bonus may therefore be the right plan for this end of the year… or not, depending on how the range evolves in a few weeks.
