According to recent reports, the Cupertino tech giant is not resting on its laurels and is preparing a major update, aimed at replacing the current AirTag in 2025. The information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who revealed that a new AirTag, codenamed “B589,” is already being tested at Apple’s manufacturing partners in Asia. Although details are still lacking, Mark Gurman suggests that the new device will have a more powerful chip to improve its geolocation capabilities.

This matches previous predictions from the ever-reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who predicted an updated AirTag model arriving in 2025 as early as October 2023. Ming-Chi Kuo also expects the next-gen either compatible with Apple’s mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro.

The AirTag 2 could be even more precise

For users, these improvements could mean more accurate location data and better range for tracking lost items. Gurman also shared his personal wish list, including a louder speaker for easier location, longer battery life, and even a variant optimized specifically for wallets.

The potential AirTag improvements come as Apple continues to strengthen its anti-harassment protections for the most popular trackers. While the original model launched with security measures in place, the company has repeatedly strengthened these protections through software updates in response to reports of the devices being exploited for nefarious purposes such as bullying and harassment.

As the AirTag matures, it faces increasing competition from third-party offerings that leverage Apple’s Find My network for object tracking. Several companies now offer compatible trackers, some of which are specifically designed for wallets and other common use cases. It therefore now remains to be seen exactly how Apple plans to counterattack next year.
