a new leak that no one saw coming

The Resident Evil license was unfortunately conspicuous by its absence during Summer Game Fest 2024 and is being talked about again via a leak that was unexpected to say the least.

While we might have expected yet another leak around Resident Evil 9 or a Code Veronica/0 Remake, none of that for this new leak around Capcom’s legendary Survival Horror license. This one actually takes us back to the roots of the franchise, many years ago.

Unexpected return from the dead with this Resident Evil leak

We owe the discovery of this leak to Gematsu, who shared his find on X.com. It discusses the classification in Europe of Resident Evil… the first of the name, released in 1996, on PC. Not a PC version of the remaster released on GameCube in particular, but of the original game, headed by a certain Shinji Mikami. Remember that this first opus had already been ported to PC, but only in a physical format.

As Gematsu points out, the original Resident Evil from 1996 was never released on Steam or any other equivalent digital platform like GOG or the Epic Games Store. So this could happen soon. Some fans are speculating that this is a first step towards releasing a collection of the first games of the license in a digital format.

As it stands, it is therefore appropriate to take these speculations with a cautious grain of salt while awaiting official confirmation from Capcom. Same observation for the next games a priori in the pipeline for its iconic Survival Horror franchise. We think in particular of the famous Resident Evil 9 which would try to scare us in an open world, or the Remake of the iconic Code Veronica, among others. Unfortunately, Monster Hunter Wilds stole the show at Summer Game Fest 2024. But maybe the Japanese studio was keeping some ammo and green herbs on hand for GamesCom in Cologne in August? See you in two short months to find out.
