Agence France-Presse is creating a post of journalist “in charge of diversity”. The post aims to “improve the representation of women and diversity” in content produced by AFP. The agency’s information director, Phil Chetwynd, believes that “it is essential for the credibility of AFP that its writing and content better reflect the diversity of the world in which we live”.

Jessica Lopez will occupy this new position

Journalist Jessica Lopez has been appointed central editorial assistant in charge of editorial principles and diversity at AFP. Jessica Lopez is the author of a report submitted in May 2022 to the Information Department on these issues. She “will in particular ensure the proper application of AFP’s editorial rules on gender, diversity and discrimination issues, the animation of the editorial staff on these subjects, the monitoring of training and the implementation”, specifies the AFP.

An impact beyond AFP

“In parallel with this work on content, AFP has set among its priorities, in terms of human resources, to enrich the variety of profiles in its workforce and in its management. This policy is based in particular on the recommendations of a Diversity Committee, created in May 2021 and made up of fourteen employees from across AFP’s global network,” reads the news agency’s website.

There will be an impact beyond AFP, since the content is taken up in many media. This is the very principle of a press agency.
