a new Slim version with a removable disk drive is coming in November, it’s official

Thunderclap in the video game industry, Sony has officially announced by surprise the imminent launch of a new version of its flagship console PS5, this time equipped with a removable disk.

For several months now, several reports have predicted the arrival of a new version of the PS5. If a few mentioned a “Pro” model, the majority of them rather referred to a “Slim” version, like the PS4 Slim, released in 2016.

Sony has finally put an end to the rumors by officially announcing the arrival of a new lightweight version of the home console, but which is not officially named “Slim”. This one also has a rather interesting feature: It has a removable disk drive. Two new versions will replace the current PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition.

The new PS5 is smaller and lighter

The new PS5 presents a significant overall volume reduction of over 30% and weight reduction of up to 24% (depending on the model chosen), according to figures shared by Sony. The new PS5 Digital Edition will weigh only 2.6 kg with dimensions of 358 x 80 x 216 mmcompared to 3.9 kg and 390 x 92 x 26 mm for the old version.

As for the classic version, it will now weigh only 3.2 kg, a far cry from the previous 4.5 kg. It measures 358 x 96 x 216 mm, compared to 390 x 104 x 260 mm for the initial model. Apart from the reduction in their size and the arrival of the removable diskthese new versions are unfortunately not more powerful than the previous ones.

The new PS5 and the new PS5 Digital Edition are essentially the same devices, but the classic version comes with a removable disc drive. It will therefore be possible to transform the new Digital Edition version into classic PS5 by simply adding this external drive, but this will require buy it separately at a price of 119.99 euros.

On the price side, the new PS5 Digital Edition will be sold at 449.99 euros in Francewhile you will have to pay 549.99 euros to offer you the PS5 version delivered with the removable disk. Sony announces that the two consoles will be available in November, without further details at the moment. A base will also be offered for sale at a price of 29.99 euros.
