A new French study has analyzed the information of patients with severe forms of the coronavirus, and has highlighted a possible new physical characteristic. Say hello to Covid eyes …
Many of the symptoms and / or consequences of the coronavirus were already known, more or less unusual: cough, fever, but also hair loss or even damaged toe and skin. A new physical manifestation of the disease has just been highlighted: impaired vision, which can lead to blindness in the worst cases.
A study was carried out from March to May 2020 at the Rotschild Hospital, in Paris, on 129 patients aged on average 63 years old and suffering from a severe form of the disease. These people had magnetic resonance imaging brain scans. Of these, 7% had signs of eye abnormalities, including lumps, which may be a symptom of inflammation or damage to the eyes. The most affected were the men. One of the lead authors of this study, Dr. Augustin Lecler, a neuroradiologist, told Live Science that if these nodules persist, "they could lead to severe vision loss or even blindness". Be careful, however, not to want to jump to conclusions: there is no evidence at this time of a direct link between these nodules and the coronavirus as such. This eye damage could also be due to the position of the patients during their hospitalization.
