The 13e generation of processors Intel is expected to ship this fall, just a year after Alder Lake’s launch.

The least we can say is that we are not idle at Intel and according to some indiscretions, the processors of the Raptor Lake range will indeed be available before the end of the year.

8 high-performance Raptor Cove cores

To be convinced of this, it suffices – as was able to do Videocardz – take a look at the recent publication ofPreview. The Chinese site has managed to get its hands on a pre-production copy of what is believed to be a Core i9-13900.

In the jargon, we speak ofengineering sample, in other words, a not yet final version of the next generation Raptor Lake. The CPU-Z snapshot published by our colleague leaves little doubt about the nature of the processor, even if the software cannot yet recognize it.

Indeed, theengineering sample is a model with 8 efficient cores and 16 efficient cores. The former are rumored to be Raptor Cove while the latter are the same Gracemonts already used on processors in the Alder Lake range.

This pre-production sample is supported by 36 MB of cache, an increase of 6 MB compared to the most powerful of the Alder Lake range, the Core i9-12900K, which was also used for the comparison. Frequencies are advanced, but the information does not seem reliable: from 1.4 to 3.8 GHz on the Raptor Cove cores and from 1 to 2 GHz on the Gracemont.

About 20% more performance

Pin-to-pin compatible with the Alder Lake range, the Raptor Lake processors will be able to run on the same motherboards. Preview used an ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Extreme for its test as well as 32 GB of DDR5-5200 memory and a GeForce RTX 3090 FE.

Note that if the card accepts the CPU, its BIOS has not been optimized for Raptor Lake. Our colleague was able to pass his sample through numerous tests and we therefore advise you to consult the article for all the details.

Results under Sisoft Sandra 2021 © Videocardz

Sisoft Sandra 2021 is the first software used by Preview. The Raptor Lake CPU can be up to 51.5% faster than the Core i9-12900K. In the majority of cases however, the difference is rather around 15 to 25%, but systematically in favor of the Core i9-13900.

The R20/R23 versions of Cinebench were then put to use with mixed fortunes for Raptor Lake. Indeed, if in operations multithreadedthe Core i9-13900 is about 25% faster, it must admit defeat by the Core i9-12900K in singlethread (-10%).

Summary of the duel Core i9-13900 ES vs Core i9-12900K © Videocardz

On average, using many other tools, the Core i9-13900 outperforms the Core i9-12900K by plus or minus 20%. It should also be noted that the processor used is not a ‘K’ model and that, due to the preview, things are bound to evolve.
