Apple has filed a patent that would provide for the addition of a photo sensor to its Apple Watch.

Want to take a unique photo moment when you forgot your smartphone? Apple has found the parade and could integrate a photo module directly into its home connected watch. An idea at first sight attractive, but which would not necessarily be practical.

Look on the back!

Apple is used to being a powerhouse when it comes to new things to bring to the field of connected watches. The Cupertino company has been offering various interesting health functions for several years (electrocardiogram, oximeter). The trend could continue when we look at this patent filed with the American authorities and which offers a new kind of Apple Watch.

Indeed, the latter would integrate a photo sensor. This interesting idea has already been the subject of other patents. Except that there is a catch, since said sensor would take place… on the back of the watch case! The patent registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office indeed shows a mechanism that allows the watch case to be detached, releasing the sensor. The screen is then used to view the object to be photographed, as for a smartphone.

The false good idea?

This is not the first time that Apple has considered this possibility. A patent dated last year already proposed the addition of a photo sensor to the connected watch, this time at the level of the crown of the device. But if, at first glance, being able to take photos thanks to an object constantly attached to our wrist may seem attractive, the idea also has perhaps crippling flaws.

First, a module installed in a watch will surely produce shots of a much lower quality than what comes out of a phone today. Above all, with such a placement, it will be necessary to detach the case each time to be able to switch to photo mode, which should tire the wearer very quickly. So, obviously, a patent is very far from being equal to a future commercialization, but if Apple wants to install a photo sensor, shouldn’t it find a better place?
