Corsair seeks affordable performance with its HS55 Wireless. A gaming headset that has something to offer, but which won’t break the bank. The perfect happy medium? Let’s see what that gives!
Corsair and helmets, it’s a long love affair. Not long ago, I was able to test the very recent HS80 Max Wireless, a gem of its kind, as comfortable as it is efficient. A premium headset that still has something to calm the ardor of small budgets. This is where the HS55 Wireless enters the scene, a headset which once again aims for performance, but at an attractive price this time.
Available since 2023, the HS55 Wireless is currently well below €100, therefore affordable. Its recommended launch price was around €119. A reasonable price for those looking for a headset calibrated for gaming (but not only) with excellent sound performance. And if there are obvious concessions, Corsair still delivers when it comes to finishing.
A simple and effective design
In fact, the HS55 Wireless opts for a relatively classic design for the brand. If the manufacturer has qualities, risk-taking is not one of them. So it’s very simple and clean. No frills or RGB at all and two colors: black or white (depending on your tastes). For this test, Corsair provided me with a black version, very aesthetic in fact, all in plastic with a small, slightly textured pad to give a reflective effect on the two earpieces. Very simple, but effective.
On the other hand, at first glance, it doesn’t seem super robust, at least less so than its big brothers. The plastic is light and the deployable headband to enlarge the contour of the head is quite thin. Fortunately, the latter is made of metal which gives it a certain resistance. However, nothing to report. He behaves well, and knows how to be easily forgotten. It must be said that with 266 grams on the scale, it’s quite easy. Its leather cushion with memory foam makes it particularly comfortable, although I would have liked it to be wider and a bit thicker. The hoop, however, allows you to correct the shot by accepting any type of head, even if the notches are not well marked.
The earcups, on the other hand, are much more spacious and offer plenty of space so as not to feel suffocated. On the other hand, we will quickly feel hot. Leatherette quickly raises the temperature and does not allow air to pass through. It will certainly be necessary to air the esgourds from time to time. On the other hand, the sound insulation is rather good, although not complete. Note that the earcups are placed on pivots, which allows them to be folded down to wear the headset around the neck for example, or store it more easily.
The HS55 offers very good performance
However, this will not prevent you from taking maximum advantage of the audio performance offered by this HS55 Wireless. The 50mm headphones clearly provide the show natively, that is to say without touching anything. The sounds are powerful, the bass hits the guts (a bit too much perhaps) and the spatialization is quite good. The support for Dolby Atmos is also a significant plus here, as the technology (which is clearly becoming more popular) has already proven itself for 3D rendering. The microphone mounted on a flexible and adjustable boom is also of good quality and offers a rather clear sound, although a little distant casually. We will be able to control all these beautiful people with the few buttons on the earpieces, the sound and the microphone on the left, the headset voltage and the Bluetooth on the right. Easy as pie.
In game (that’s mainly why you are here), the main rendering is very good and will allow you to fully enjoy your games in total immersion. On the other hand, for competitive souls, you will have to use the iCue software to refine the settings. Fortunately, as usual (and I say this in every test of the brand, I insist), Corsair provides when it comes to software support. iCue is easy to use, will keep your hardware updated regularly and will give you the benefit of an equalizer, a profile manager and other small, easy-to-use settings. Whether you’re used to it or not.
Astronomical autonomy
In terms of connectivity, the headset will charge via a USB-C cable provided in the box. The autonomy is rather good, very good even, since it is possible to enjoy several dozen hours without recharging it, 20 hours without an alert on my side. Excellent then. Wireless, the HS55 Wireless works via an ultra-stable 2.4 GHz USB dongle that works natively on PS4, PS5, PC and Switch. No 3.5mm jack, so Xbox players will have to look for a certified version.
