In an interview given to the “Génération Do It Yourself” podcast on Monday, President Emmanuel Macron estimated that a victory for the RN or the New Popular Front in the legislative elections would lead the country towards “civil war”. Comments which provoked the ire of the oppositions.

“If we follow your reasoning to the end, the country will explode or there will be civil war.” These remarks, made Monday by Emmanuel Macron, in an interview given to the podcast “Génération Do It Yourself” do not pass through the ranks of the oppositions. The fact of putting the New Popular Front and the National Rally back to back and deducing that the victory of one of the two camps in the legislative elections would lead to civil war was described as “unforgivable” by Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the PS .

Anger and indignation also on the side of the National Rally. “A president should not say that,” criticizes the president of the party, Jordan Bardella. “Emmanuel Macron is always there to set things on fire,” replies Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

“We cannot make this kind of statement when we are at the Élysée”

On the right, Éric Ciotti denounces a “strategy of irresponsible fear”, while the Republicans who refuse union with the National Rally adopt the same tone. For Xavier Bertrand, the president of the Hauts-de-France region, “we cannot make this kind of statement when we are at the Élysée”.

Furious opposition to the president’s exit, but also very high in the polls. For the moment, the presidential majority is only given in third position in these anticipated legislative elections.
