The box office rings in the US on Memorial Day weekend. The thriller sequel “A Quiet Place 2” grossed $ 58.5 million.

The US cinema celebrated a long-awaited comeback on the long Memorial Day weekend. The big winner is the horror thriller “A Quiet Place 2” with the actors and actresses John Krasinski (41) and Emily Blunt (38, “Into The Woods”) in the lead roles. Overall, the sequel to the surprise hit from 2018 brought in just under 58.5 million dollars (around 47.9 million euros) – a record amount in pandemic times.

“A Quiet Place 2” beats previous pandemic hit “Godzilla vs. Kong”

According to the industry portal “Box Office Mojo” the film, which Krasinski also directed, even hit the previous pandemic hit “Godzilla vs. Kong”. Disney’s live-action adventure “Cruella” lands in second place behind “A Quiet Place 2” with $ 21 million. Third place went to the horror shocker “Saw: Spiral” with two million dollars (1.6 million euros). According to the report, it has been over a year since US cinemas recorded total revenues of more than $ 100 million on a weekend – which is why this year’s “Memorial Day Weekend” is rightly classified as a comeback weekend for cinema after the start of the pandemic becomes.

Vaccinated people are allowed to take off masks in US cinemas

The higher number of visitors in the US cinemas can also be attributed to the new corona rules that have been in force in many places since last weekend. According to media reports, large chains such as AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark allow those who have been vaccinated to enjoy films without a protective mask.

The theatrical release of “A Quiet Place 2” was postponed a total of three times due to the pandemic. Originally, the flick, in which the main characters have to deal with sound-chasing creatures again, was supposed to start on March 20, 2020. The German theatrical release is scheduled for June 24, 2021.
