Around three years ago, “A Quiet Place” quickly turned from a horror insider tip to a blockbuster. Can the second part keep up with that?

The cinema finally reports back on June 24th and at least in the case of the horror flick “A Quiet Place 2” it is as quiet as a mouse. Because as with the first part by and with John Krasinski (41), who rose to a surprise hit in 2018, in the apocalyptic world full of monsters with super hearing, every little note, no matter how quiet, can be the last. You can read about where the sequel starts and what has changed compared to the predecessor. Warning, spoilers for part one will follow!

Quietly on the run: That’s what it’s about

The deadly danger posed by these cruel and sensitive creatures is still omnipresent. Every sound, no matter how small, could be her last. Evelyn (Emily Blunt, 38) is now on her own with her children Regan (Millicent Simmonds, 18), Marcus (Noah Jupe, 16) and the baby. Furthermore, the family has to go about their everyday life in absolute silence. When they are forced to set out on their way into the unknown, they quickly realize that further dangers lurk around every turn.

As the table of contents suggests, “A Quiet Place 2” immediately starts with the events of part one. Without having seen this one, it makes little sense to start with the second one. If you want to catch up on that, you should pause reading from here. For everyone else, a summary of the (hopeless?) Situation in which the first film left its protagonists behind.

No breather: This is where the film starts

As a reminder, in order to save the lives of his children, father Lee Abbott (Krasinski) sacrificed himself at the end of part one. Despite this heroic act, the fate of his loved ones seemed sealed. But when the almost unbearable beasts of the family were about to put an end to it, the interference signal from the hearing aid of the almost deaf Regan turned out to be her weakness – that and a targeted shotgun shot. The first film ended with the knowledge that I had found a way to recapture the world from creatures.

Even if Krasinski died on screen, viewers don’t have to do without him entirely. An intense flashback scene, which can also be seen in the trailer for the film, shows how Lee and Co. first found out about the existence of the monsters. Meanwhile, the male lead in the sequel has a new addition: “28 Days Later” star Cillian Murphy (45) joins the fleeing family as Emmett during the course of the film.

Record in the US

The numbers from the USA, where the film has been running since the end of May, prove how well part two is also received by the audience. Overall, the sequel played on the opening weekend just under 58.5 million dollars (around 47.9 million euros) – a record amount in times of pandemic. “A Quiet Place 2” was able to bring in even more than its successful predecessor. Three years ago, immediately after its cinema release, it “only” reached around 54.4 million US dollars (44.5 million euros).

As with the original, the approximately 100-minute sequel also applies: cinema-goers can save money at the snack counter if they don’t want to attract the displeasure of the other viewers. Because the sequel mostly stays true to the premise of absolute silence and also transforms the cinema into a quiet place – as long as the nacho man next to you doesn’t openly crunch.
