“A rotten video game character”: Brendan Fraser returns to the role of Dwayne Johnson in The Mummy

While he will soon be starring in “The Whale”, Brendan Fraser recently returned to the highlights of his career, and in particular the horrible King Scorpion in CGI, played by Dwayne Johnson in “The Return of the Mummy”.

While waiting for the theatrical release of The Whale, a drama by Darren Aronofsky in which Brendan Fraser will play a character weighing 270 kilos, the actor recently returned to his most significant roles at the microphone of GQ.

In addition to George of the Jungle or Elliot Richards in Endiablé, Brendan Fraser also mentioned the famous adventurer Rick O’Connell, whom he played in the trilogy The Mummy by Stephen Sommers, as well as the big villain of the second opus: a monster half- half-Dwayne Johnson scorpion, entirely animated in CGI for a result that, even at the time, did not convince many people.

It must be said that in the early 2000s, the creatures in computer graphics were still taking their very first steps in the cinema, and that the animators of the film had sorely lacked time to bring their King Scorpion to life:

“I know, I know. Be nice!”remembers Branden Fraser with humor.

“At the premiere of the movie, the guys who did the CGI of The Scorpion King said to me, ‘Hi, how are you? We’re the ones who did the Scorpion King in CGI. Yeah, we had need a little more time. It was really last minute.'”

However, in the eyes of the actor, and despite the result (very complicated to review today), the creature still retains a certain charm:

“I guess we could remaster it, but it wouldn’t be as fun if we didn’t see that rotten video game character of Dwayne [Johnson]. Somehow he’s perfect the way he is.”

As for Dwayne Johnson, whose Return of the Mummy marked his film debut, and who was also entitled to his spin-off afterwards, Brendan Fraser explains that he simply never met him on the filming:

“I never met Dwayne Johnson before the movie premiered, because [sur le tournage], it was a piece of tape on a stick that we had to refer to. Of course, they added it in CGI afterwards.”
