A scorching summer also for the prices of plane tickets, Actualité/Actu Quotidien

And an additional double-digit increase. Consumer price inflation is popping up everywhere, and airline ticket inflation is no exception. Published Tuesday, August 16, the price index for air passenger transport for the month of July recorded an increase in the price of tickets departing from France, all destinations combined… by 43.5% in one year! And 19.3% since the beginning of the year.

With the end of health restrictions linked to the pandemic, which was accompanied by very strong demand for certain destinations and the surge in oil prices, the bill has risen sharply for passengers.

Compared to the rates charged in the summer of 2019, prices have risen by 37.7% even though the number of travelers has not quite returned to its pre-crisis level ” As in May and June, this increase is observed on all beams, with some being more affected than others “, notes the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC).

Surge in European flights

It was international flights that increased the most (+47.1% compared to July 2021), domestic flights having suffered a more limited inflation of 37.1%.

On the international network, European flights (medium-haul) carried the bulk of this surge (+54.5%), fueled by ” the return of leisure traffic supported by low-cost carriers “, specifies the DGAC. Long-haul posted a less pronounced increase of 28.8%, mainly to Asia-Pacific and Latin America destinations.

+42.3% for journeys in mainland France

As for domestic flights, prices are up by 42.3% on intra-metropolitan connections, and by 20.7% on the Metropolitan-Overseas section. On departure from the overseas departments, inflation slowed compared to the previous months to +21.1%, the Air France offer in particular for these destinations having been reinforced.

A rise in prices which should continue in August, but probably also in the off-season in September. The imbalance between supply and demand for flights to the most popular destinations is likely to persist: the bill should still be very high for the end of year celebrations.
