A series on Jack Ma (Alibaba) in development with a French producer


Very discreet since his withdrawal from business in 2021, Jack Ma will be the subject of a series adapted from the book Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built. The French studio Oble is in charge of the production.

In January 2021, three months after an unexplained disappearance, Jack Ma reappeared in a video posted on social networks. Four months later, he withdrew from business for good, becoming the symbol of a China making life very hard for its digital giants and refusing to let a voice as strong as that of Ma express itself. But the founder of Alibaba is not going to be forgotten anytime soon.

Eager to introduce Western audiences to this major figure in Asian tech, a French production house has taken over the rights to the book. Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built to make it a series in eight episodes. Entitled jack magicthis biopic will tell “the incredible odyssey of an English teacher in China who became one of the most powerful men on the planet“. The details of the project are not yet known, but the writing should be done in close collaboration with the author of the original work, according to variety.

News of this upcoming production curiously comes days after news broke that a man with the same name as Jack Ma had been arrested by Chinese police in the city of Hangzhou, where Alibaba is based. No confirmation was given regarding the real identity of the arrested suspect, but it was enough to melt the company’s market value by $26 billion.
