“A shock of fundamental knowledge”: Gabriel Attal’s plan to raise the level of students in maths and French: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Tuesday September 5, 2023, in the columns of the newspaper The world, a collective of writers, intellectuals, artists and publishers challenged Gabriel Attal, the Minister of National Education. They asked him to initiate a profound reform of the school. They testified to being “sad parents and grandparents” and disarmed in the face of the decline in the educational level of their children, which “no longer read and struggle to write”. Faced with this call for help, Gabriel Attal responded on the set of C to you Friday October 6, 2023. He spoke on questions relating to the deterioration in the level of writing and reading of students in France. “We must take a major step for the level of our students. I called it a shock of fundamental knowledge”explained the minister, mentioning work that he promises effective “within eight weeks”. He pointed out the fact that one in three primary school students enters secondary school “without knowing how to read, write, count correctly”. A situation that he deemed unacceptable, before demanding “the best possible level for our students” on the set of France 5.

“A very high probability of dropping out”

This collapse in the academic level of primary school students portends a very sad promise: that of greater difficulty in following the courses of the first classes of secondary school, which are fundamental for the pursuit of higher education. “We know that these are students who will have a very high probability of dropping out Next”, regretted the Minister of National Education. According to him, the “fundamental knowledge”namely French and mathematics, “are the knowledges that enable all others”. As a result, he promised a change for schools at the “back to school next”. These new features will give priority to reading and calculationthe main knowledge which promises fulfillment in an academic career. “You cannot do history-geography, economics and social sciences if you do not master reading and writing”, underlined Gabriel Attal. In the same way that mathematics is a very important discipline for accessing knowledge that allows a young student to access their dream job. “You cannot master science, physics, chemistry, if you do not master calculation”outbid the guest of C to you. Students will therefore have the right to the next school year under the sign of progress and reflection.
