A shop launches the sale of socks with the effigy of the candidates

In Lille, a store has recently started selling pairs of socks bearing the image of presidential candidates. It offers portraits of seven of the contenders for the Élysée, including Emmanuel Macron, Marine Le Pen and Valérie Pécresse, and wants to highlight the plurality of the political offer of the campaign.

Having your favorite candidate at your fingertips. It is the somewhat original idea of ​​a store in Lille, which has launched into the sale of socks bearing the image of seven candidates for the presidential election. Emmanuel Macron, Marine Le Pen, Valérie Pécresse, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Éric Zemmour, Anne Hidalgo and Yannick Jadot therefore have their portraits on pairs of blue or red socks. “In public transport, I heard two ladies talking about politics. They were talking about candidates by saying ‘They make the pair!’, and the idea came to me”, says Maxime Lemersre, the founder of the Chaussettes store. and company at the initiative of the project, on actu.fr.

In the shop, there are therefore only seven candidates out of the 12 qualified who are entitled to a pair bearing their image. Maxime Lemersre, however, dismisses any political preference. “There are not all the candidates because it would be logistically complicated to produce 12 different pairs. There is no bias on our part, everyone does what they want with them”, explains the trader. The portraits of the candidates also exist in a masked version, in a nod to the Covid-19.

A pair with the effigy of… Christiane Taubira

One of the pairs offered by the store denotes since it bears the image of… Christiane Taubira, a candidate for a time but who failed to obtain 500 sponsorships. “This pair will be collector’s item,” smiles Maxime Lemersre.

With this initiative, the founder wants to highlight political plurality. “We talk a lot about politics, but we vote less and less,” said Maxime Lemersre. The socks, made in France, Portugal and Italy, are sold for 13 euros a pair. But for the moment, impossible to say which sells the best. “We are going to become the first physical polling institute,” quips the entrepreneur, who points out, however, that “some campaign teams have already started to contact us.”
