All it took was a small, inexplicable bug on Apple Maps for an Australian restaurateur to post losses of several thousand dollars. For no particular reason and especially without him realizing it, the GPS application indicated that his restaurant had closed. When he contacted Apple to resolve the issue, they were met with a wall.
It happens that an application is the victim of a bug. Often even, but not all have the same degree of seriousness. It was particularly annoying, in particular, when Apple Maps leaked its users’ location data to other applications. Unfortunately, Apple’s GPS service is yet again to blame for another problem which this time cost an Australian restaurateur dearly, even though he had never used the application in his life.
Chris Pyatt is the manager of a Thai restaurant in Queensland. One day, he found himself very helpless when a former customer asked him why his establishment closed. However, the latter is still well and truly open. Chris Pyatt immediately makes the connection with a sharp drop in income that occurred a few months earlier. The culprit is then clearly found: Apple Maps mistakenly shows his restaurant closed for weeks.

The bill is steep. Chris Pyatt estimates that this bug represents a shortfall of 12,000 Australian dollars for his restaurant, or around 7,300 euros. The restaurant immediately contacts Apple to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, this one doesn’t get the expected reaction. The firm actually refuses to help him, since he is not a customer of theirs. Chris Pyatt uses an Android smartphone and a Windows PC.

Apple still tells him that he can modify his restaurant information himself from any web browser. After an initial failure on Edge, he manages to submit the changes via Chrome. He will then have to wait several days for them to finally appear on the application… without putting an end to the ordeal. One problem resolved, a new one appears: still to this day, the location of the restaurant on Apple Maps is not the correct one. Chris Pyatt is now waiting for the application to finally update the location, after yet another attempt.
