Other long-distance venues quickly followed the French example. A 4.0 liter class was adopted at Sebring, the Targa Florio and the 1000 kilometer race at the Nürburgring. This didn’t go unnoticed by the Ferrari engineers, and they soon began to seriously consider installing a 4-liter engine in a GTO. This was the beginning of the history of the model, which would later become the most expensive Ferrari to date.
