a statement that will relieve fans of the cult film

Is Beetlejuice 2 already likely to be a pleasant surprise? In any case, excellent news reassures a little more about the way in which the film is created.

It may seem improbable, but Beetlejuice 2 is coming out this year in French theaters. A project, it must be said, very challenging. It will therefore be a direct sequel to the original 1988 film and we will find part of the cast with Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz), Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz) and Michael Keaton (the bio-exorcist). And to bring freshness, Tim Burton once again placed his trust in the star of the Netflix series Wednesday, Jenna Ortega (Astrid Deetz). But also to his new wife Monica Bellucci.

Beetlejuice 2 is old school, the best?

Is it in old pots that we make the best soup? Not always, but sometimes returning to more authentic things helps. And for Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton tuned their violins to an element. The overabundance of CGI, which can be horrible if done poorly, is a no. The majority of what we saw had to be “handmade”, or the feature film would probably have failed.

The only thing we agreed on very, very early on was that if we were going to make Beetlejuice 2, I absolutely didn’t want to make a film with too much technology. It had to be done by hand. What was fun back then was seeing someone in the corner holding something for you. To look at everyone in the waiting room [ndlr : la séquence où la tête du personnage rétrécit] and to say to oneself “There are people underneath, who make these things work, who try to do things well”. That’s the most interesting thing. When you can do that again, after years of standing in front of a giant green screen, pretending that someone is in front of you, it feels amazing.

So obviously, this doesn’t predict the final quality of Beetlejuice 2, but it’s already a good start. We are now waiting to know if the writing of the script, handled by the showrunners of the Wednesday series, is on track and if the film will be as extravagant as the original. Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled to be released in cinemas on September 11, 2024 in France.
