An original form of protest, to say the least. Fortunately, the act of this angry teacher will not affect the baccalaureate mark of the sixty students whose copies have been destroyed, as indicated by the Ministry of National Education.

It is the cry of a teacher filled with anger. This Tuesday, May 9, 2023, an English teacher was taken into police custody in Paris for having set fire to 63 copies of his students’ baccalaureate exam. The one who teaches the language of Shakespeare in the professional high school Maria Deraisme, located in the 16th arrondissement of the capital, placed the copies in a metal basket before lighting the fire, a symbol of his anger.

A form of protest, to say the least original, aimed at denouncing the reform of the pension system and more particularly the system of grading for National Education tests. Asked by our colleagues from Parisian, Victor Immordinos, who wanted “cancel the test so that there are no catastrophic marks” in the baccalaureate explains that he acted with good intentions. Because according to him, the majority of the destroyed copies of the baccalaureate showed worrying results on the exam, 7 corresponding to the standards established by the professional baccalaureate.

Awaiting judgment

The teacher took care to film and broadcast the images of his act of revolt on which we can see him setting fire to the copies in front of the enclosure of the establishment of the Parisian vocational school where he exercises. On the side of the Ministry of National Education, it is ensured that all measures have been taken to guarantee students whose copies have been burned not to be penalized in their examination. The rectorate of Paris has meanwhile indicated that a complaint was being filed against the teacher who is also the subject of a “human resources” procedure.

The English teacher has been suspended from his duties, while the management of the establishment in which he worked evokes a casting error. “Before the exam, I chose to disclose the subject to my students and to prepare it with them. My reasoning was as follows: these final year students are coming to the end of their secondary education”justifies Victor Immordinos to our colleagues from France info.

The Minister of National Education, Pap N’diaye, who heavily condemned this gesture on social networks, does not seem to hear it with the same ear. Placed under judicial supervision, the suspect will be tried next October for “destruction of the property of others by means dangerous for people” and incurs a 10-year prison sentence and 150,000 euros in fines.
