The possibility of a third confinement is increasingly likely. This Saturday, January 23, Olivier Véran explains to the Parisian that the government is waiting "to be fixed on the effects of the curfew", which are expected to be revealed next week. "If it does not decrease, if the variants start to spread everywhere, then we will take additional measures, obviously. And this is called containment. […] We will not wait until March to act", says the Minister of Health.
A government source told AFP on Friday that "the containment hypothesis [was] more and more likely". This January 24, it's the turn of "several high-ranking sources within the executive" to affirm in the Journal du Dimanche that "the decision is about to be made". According to the weekly, Emmanuel Macron could announce it next Wednesday in a televised address, after the defense council, and the confinement will last at least three weeks.
The terms of this third confinement are not yet certain, but there could be a partial closure of non-essential businesses. On the other hand, schools would remain open. "The situation allows school continuity. But we are vigilant", indicates Jean-Michel Blanquer to Sunday newspaper. The Minister of National Education declares: "I prefer the terms that prevailed in November with open schools, especially since we see a posteriori that our strategy has worked. […] All our work is to avoid this hypothesis [to close schools], even if it remains conceivable in case of absolute necessity. School remains essential for our children ".
