Taiwan: China’s nuclear bombers approach island

Tensions between China and Taiwan have recently increased. Taipei has now reported the penetration of 27 Chinese aircraft into its air defense zone. According to the information, this also includes bombers capable of nuclear weapons.

According to Taiwan, 27 aircraft from China penetrated the air defense identification zone (ADIZ) of the island nation. As announced by the Ministry of Defense in Taipei, the aircraft also included five H-6 bombers capable of nuclear weapons. The air defense zone is not identical to the airspace of a state.

Tensions between the two countries have increased in recent months. Taiwan has been complaining about Chinese Air Force operations near the island for more than a year. From a Taiwanese point of view, China wants to test Taiwan’s readiness for action and tire its armed forces.

Beijing sees democratic Taiwan, which withdrew to the island in 1949, as a breakaway province rather than an independent state. In addition, the People’s Republic of China rejects any form of formal relations between other countries and the island republic.

It was only on Friday that the Chinese army held military exercises near the Taiwan Strait. A Chinese army spokesman said it was about combat readiness exercises by the naval and air forces. The maneuver took place the day after US MPs arrived in Taiwan. With their visit, the US representatives wanted to express solidarity with the Taiwanese authorities. Taiwan is one of the biggest conflict issues between China and the US.
