A Westeros tournament live on stage: “Game of Thrones” prequel comes to the theater

GAME OF THRONES

The “Game of Thrones” universe is being expanded not only through various spin-offs, but also through a play. In it we experience the Harrenhal tournament.

  • Epic battles and gigantic dragons are difficult to bring to the stage, but intrigue was already Shakespeare’s secret weapon.
  • The announced “Game of Thrones” play can certainly work.
  • As a prequel we experience the important tournament of Harenhall.

The whole story is a bit reminiscent of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and “Stranger Things: The First Shadow”: The HBO series “Game of Thrones” is becoming a play! The Hollywood Reporter, among others, reported on the plans for a stage version as early as 2021, but the project is only now taking shape.

“Game of Thrones” creator George RR Martin is developing together with playwright Duncan MacMillan a stage play about the great tournament at Harrenhal, which is mentioned frequently in the series and Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Martin recently visited London, as he revealed in his blog, to further work on the piece.

The legendary tournament full of jousting, archery competitions and other knightly exercises took place over 10 full days. A young, shy Ned Stark was present, according to fantasy lore, as was his rebellious sister Lyanna, a cocky teenager Jaime Lannister, and the powerful Lord Robert Baratheon.

At the end of the great tournament, Crown Prince Rhaegar Targaryen publicly declared his love for Robert’s fiancée Lyanna Stark, leading to Robert’s rebellion and the fall of House Targaryen – and creating the situation that “Game of Thrones” viewers get to know at the start of the series. Not an unimportant moment in the history of Westeros.

What will be particularly tempting for “Game of Thrones” fans will be the opportunity to experience younger versions of popular characters. In addition to those just mentioned, Cersei and Tyrion Lannister as well as their father Tywin, Littlefinger and Varys were guests at the great tournament at Harrenhal. However, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Arya Stark had not yet been born at that time.

The “Game of Thrones” play is initially scheduled to be performed on New York’s Broadway, London’s West End and in Australia. The premiere was once planned for 2023, but George RR Martin is now hoping for a start at the end of 2024.
