The tragic deaths of Aaron Carter and his sisters Leslie and Bobbie Jean are all drug-related. His twin sister Angel Carter has now spoken openly about the possible reasons on US television.
Angel Carter, 36, had to bury three of her siblings far too early. The reason? A drug overdose or poisoning. Only her famous brother, “Backstreet Boy” Nick Carter, 44, and half-sister Taelyn Dobson are still alive. Her twin brother and former child star Aaron Carter died in 2022 at the age of just 34 by drowning in the bathtub. Her sisters Leslie (2012 at the age of 25) and Bobbie Jean (2023 at the age of 41) also passed away far too early. Angel spoke about the possible reasons on US breakfast television on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

“There were five siblings, three of them had substance abuse and mental health problems. Why do you think this happened in your family?” “CBS Mornings” host Gayle King, 69, wants to know from Angel Carter. According to her, the reason lies in the dysfunctionality of her family. Nick Carter’s sister explains: “There was a lot of love. But at the same time there was a lot of chaos.”
Then she continues: “We just argued. My parents argued all the time. There was only unrest at home. No boundaries. No stability. Nobody I could talk to.” The result: Angel felt insecure; she lacked a secure foundation. She couldn’t rely on her parents when she had problems.
The fame and money “changed everything”
The fame of her brothers that surrounded her family “changed everything” and fueled dysfunction, according to Angel Carter. The twin sister of the late Aaron Carter speaks out and describes:
Nick has been with the Backstreet Boys since I was four or five years old. So a really long time. We were from upstate New York. We were a family that had no money. My parents were poor. And they had never seen anything like it. Then when the money came, the dynamic changed because the money became the driving force.
Her parents’ alcohol addiction fueled problems
In addition, her parents Jane Schneck and Robert Gene Carter (†) abused alcohol. The addiction also had a negative impact on Angel and her siblings, the 36-year-old explained in an interview with the US magazine “People” in August 2023. His twin sister is certain that all of this pressure drove Aaron himself into addiction.
“The beginning of the end”
The early death of his sister Leslie and the farewell to his father in 2017 – Robert is said to have suffered a heart attack – were “the beginning of the end” for Aaron. “He wasn’t feeling well before, but it was like a domino effect,” Angel told People. Angel no longer has any contact with her mother, who shocked people with photos of Aaron’s accident scene in March 2022.
She described the publication of the pictures as an “invasion of privacy” and Aaron would never have wanted that, said Angel. She is now involved in an organization that cares about the mental health of children.
