ABB: Develops a mobile network simulator

(CercleFinance.com) – ABB is working with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) to develop a mobile grid simulator to test renewable energy equipment for performance, stability and regulatory compliance of the network.

It will be used to test, in the field or under real conditions, the safety and reliability of renewable energy equipment, such as wind turbines, hydroelectric generators.

In addition to its practical application, the mobile simulator will play an important role in research and development, especially for various ‘network of the future’ scenarios.

‘We need to figure out how to operate renewable energy equipment in the safest, most reliable and, of course, most energy-efficient way possible. This is where the expanded testing capabilities of the mobile network simulator will add enormous value,” says Chris Poynter, president of ABB System Drives division.

When it enters service in 2023, the mobile network simulator will be the largest of its kind in the world. It will have a power rating of up to 28 megavolt-amperes (MVA) and a short-duration capability of up to 80 MVA.
