ABB: towards an explosion of offshore wind power in the United Kingdom?

(CercleFinance.com) – ABB estimates that 24 new wind farms with an average capacity of 1.5GW would need to be developed over the next seven years to meet UK government targets for wind energy capacity offshore, i.e. going from 13.7 GW to 50 GW by 2030 (+265%).

If this target is achieved, the UK’s electricity supply from offshore wind would increase from 18% to 62%, providing renewable energy to every UK household, around 29.98 million homes, with a surplus available to export and power an additional 37 million households in neighboring countries.

Offshore wind currently powers 15.28 million UK homes a year.

‘In order to achieve the UK’s ambitious targets, we must collectively find ways to reduce the cost of developing new wind farms, speed up planning and permitting processes, secure the supply chain and to upgrade the grid infrastructure to support the massive growth in energy flow and grid connections,” said Per-Erik Holsten, ABB Energy Industries’ head of Northern Europe.
