  • In the US state of Texas, a federal judge suspended approval for the abortion drug mifepristone.
  • The pill is used in more than half of all abortions.
  • The US Department of Justice announced that it would appeal.

The Texas court suspended the approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. However, Friday’s decision should only come into force in seven days. The court wants to give the authority responsible for approving drugs the opportunity to appeal, the court said.

The Texas judge granted an order in an anti-abortion lawsuit against the FDA. The opponents accuse the FDA of not having tested the drug sufficiently.

Shortly after the Texas verdict, a US court in Washington state ruled that access to the drug must continue. The US Department of Justice also announced that it would appeal the injunction.
