AfD politician wins mayoral election in Saxony

In the Saxon town of Prima, the AfD already has a mayor, and now another is coming. In Groß Schirma, state parliament member Rolf Weigand won the mayoral election. A CDU candidate took last place.

In Saxony, an AfD politician has once again been elected mayor. State parliament member Rolf Weigand clearly won the mayoral election in the small town of Großschirma on Sunday. According to the preliminary election results, the 39-year-old, who ran as an individual candidate, received 59.4 percent in the first round of voting and thus clearly prevailed against two other candidates.

André Erler from the Independent Citizens’ Association received 22.3 percent, Gunther Zschommler from the CDU got 18.2 percent. Around 4,400 citizens were eligible to vote, and voter turnout was 73.9 percent. Because Weigand already received an absolute majority in the first round, a second round is not necessary.

It was only in December that the AfD candidate Tim Lochner won the mayoral election in Pirna, Saxony. It was the first time that the AfD had a mayor in Germany. Lochner was previously a member of the AfD faction in the city council, but is not a party member himself.
