It’s time for communication on the side of Sony Interactive Entertainmentwhich yesterday announced a Playstation Showcase. This time, it is a question of accessibility on this day dedicated to the subject, and more precisely of the handle inserted into the CES 2023 at the beginning of the year under the code name Project Leonardo. Now you have to call him Access, all in simplicity. Many new details about him have therefore been introduced via the PlayStation-Blog by Senior Vice President of Platform Experiences, Hideaki Nishino.
The latter thus specifies everything that we can find when purchasing the controller, supporting visuals, and introduces the interface which will be accessible from the PS5, allowing functions to be assigned to the various keys. The video above gives the floor to the development teamsincluding Kate Marlin of Santa Monica Studio we had already heard about this in one of the developer diaries of God of War Ragnarokwhich tell us about the subject of accessibility more generally.
While accessibility is a priority topic for us throughout the year, the month of May is always a bit special with the International Day of Accessibility. This day makes it possible to become aware of the progress made by the community, but also by the sector as a whole, aimed at making video games ever more inclusive. At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are firmly committed to this mission. That’s why we are delighted to finally be able to reveal the Access controller for the PS5 console through new information and images.
New product information and images
Unveiled at this year’s CES as “Project Leonardo,” the Access Controller for PS5 is an all-new, ultra-customizable accessibility kit that will make it easier, more comfortable, and easier for gamers with disabilities to play video games. Longer.
Developed in collaboration with accessibility experts, the Access controller will feature an expanded range of interchangeable keycaps and joysticks allowing players to create different layouts to suit their strength, motor abilities and specific physical needs. Each Access controller will include:
- Analog stick caps (standard, rounded and ball);
- Keycaps in various sizes and shapes, including:
- Cushion-type keycaps;
- Flat keycaps;
- A wide flat keycap (which covers two key slots);
- Cantilevered keycaps (useful for players with small hands, as they are positioned closer to the center);
- Curved keycaps (pressable when placed near the top, or pullable when placed near the bottom of the controller);
- Labels for interchangeable key caps, making it easy to identify the input assigned to each key.
Additionally, players can use the Access controller on flat surfaces, orient it 360 degrees, or attach it to an AMPS support (mounting standard for attaching all types of devices, in particular to accessibility equipment) or to a tripod. They can also adjust the distance between the analog stick and the gamepad.
Thanks to four 3.5mm AUX ports of the Access controller, players will be able to integrate their own switches, buttons or analog joysticks.
Overview of the Access Controller UI
In addition to extensive hardware customization options, the Access Controller offers a myriad of ways to create custom interface and configuration settings, giving gamers new gameplay options.
Key functions and command profiles
On the PS5 console, players can select their preferred orientation for the Access controller, assign different inputs to keys, toggle keys on or off, and even assign two different inputs to the same key. They can also create their favorite command profiles for different games or genres (like “fighting games” or “driving games”).
Joystick Association and Analog Joystick Adjustment
A maximum of two Access controllers can be combined with a DualSense (or DualSense Edge) wireless controller to form a single virtual controller. Thus, players can combine different devices or play collaboratively with others. Just like with the DualSense Edge wireless controller, gamers can also adjust the starting position and grip sensitivity. The ability to adjust Dead Zones (how far your analog stick travels before input is recognized in-game) and Joystick Sensitivity is especially useful for gamers looking for more precise control in-game.
Failover mode
The Access Controller also features a toggle mode that allows players to use a key the same way as the Lock key. shift on a keyboard. For example, if you enable toggle mode for acceleration in a racing game, the Access controller will automatically accelerate the car without you having to hold down the key.
Players can enable toggle mode for any programmable input. For example, if a game requires you to hold down the L3 key (the left analog stick) to sprint, which can be tricky for some players, you can change the behavior of this input to “click L3 key to activate or disable sprint” by activating toggle mode for the key you assigned to the L3 key.
The release date, price and other information about the controller Access will be communicated later. The PS5, its games and accessories are available on Amazon.
