Professional cyclist loses three fingers after emergency surgery

Shocking crash in the Pyrenees: The Dutch professional cyclist Koen de Kort crashes into a car while driving cross-country and later has to undergo emergency surgery. The 38-year-old loses three fingers. But he’s still doing fine, his team says.

The Dutch professional cyclist Koen de Kort had three fingers amputated in an emergency operation after a serious car accident in the Pyrenees. This was announced by his team Trek-Segafredo. According to the information, the former teammate of John Degenkolb and Marcel Kittel was traveling cross-country and had to be flown in a helicopter to a hospital in Sabadell near Barcelona after the crash and then operated on immediately.

“The amputation was a complete removal,” said team doctor Manuel Rodriguez Alonso. The eight-time tour participant had the third, fourth and fifth fingers of his right hand amputated. Because the wounds are so dirty, de Kort is also given antibiotics to prevent further infection. Despite the shock, de Kort is apparently in good shape, according to the team.

De Kort was not nominated for the 108th Tour de France, which begins tomorrow, Saturday in Brest.
