Accident in East Tyrol – While cleaning: Sagging elevator hit woman in the head

Serious accident at work on Thursday in an apartment building in Matrei in East Tyrol! A 67-year-old woman was hit in the head by a sinking elevator car while cleaning work. She was flown to the hospital in Klagenfurt. It is still unclear why the accident occurred.

The couple who own the apartment building were busy cleaning an elevator shaft on Thursday. “In order to be able to clean the elevator windows in the basement, the elevator car was manually controlled by the owner in the server room,” the police say. This resulted in a height of around 1.50 meters between the tiled floor and the cabin floor. The woman therefore climbed into the elevator shaft with a ladder. 67-year-old rescued by fire department. However, for reasons that are currently unknown, the elevator car unexpectedly dropped around 50 centimeters and hit the woman on the head. “She fell backwards onto the bottom of the shaft,” said investigators. The husband heard his wife’s crash and immediately called 911. The volunteer fire department secured the driving cabin against further descent and treated the injured person in the elevator shaft. After the rescue, the 67-year-old was flown to the hospital in Klagenfurt by emergency helicopter. The Matrei fire brigade in East Tyrol with five vehicles and 25 emergency services, the Matrei rescue service in East Tyrol including an emergency doctor, the Christophorus 7 emergency doctor helicopter and a police patrol were on duty.
