The Medusa Beach Club is a well-known and popular two-storey restaurant on the beach promenade of Playa de Palma – just a few streets away from cult bars such as Megapark and Bierkönig.

According to the Mallorcan authorities, the victims are a man and three women. The head of the Palma fire brigade, Eder García, said that most of those affected were probably people “of different nationalities and middle-aged”. One of the women who died worked in the bar, wrote the newspaper “El País” and other media.

Several firefighters, Palma police officers and ambulances were on site, local media reported. The emergency services searched for further victims under the rubble late into the night, but announced early Friday morning that there was “90 percent certainty” that there were no other people under the rubble. Nevertheless, the search work may continue for many more hours.

According to initial reports, the terrace collapsed on Thursday evening at around 8:30 p.m., sweeping other rooms down with it. The newspaper “El País” reports, citing eyewitnesses, that the first floor collapsed down to the basement. An initial investigation has shown that overloading of the first floor was a possible cause of the collapse, according to the local fire department.

Late in the evening, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on the online platform X and stressed: “I am closely following the consequences of the terrible collapse on the beach in Palma.”

At the time of the collapse, the restaurant was full. Immediately after the incident, up to 1,000 people gathered in front of the club, several regional newspapers reported. After the start of the party season, Playa de Palma has been full of tourists again since the end of April, especially from Germany.

Three days of mourning on Mallorca

The police had to repeatedly ask the crowd to be quiet so that rescue teams could hear the voices of possible survivors under the rubble.

The regional minister-president Marga Prohens, the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, and the first deputy mayor, Javier Bonet, also rushed to the beach to see the tragedy and the rescue work on site. Mayor Martínez declared three days of mourning.
