- 116 people lost their lives on Swiss roads in the first half of the year.
- That is 29 more fatalities than in the same period a year ago.
- It is unclear whether the corona pandemic and increased mobility in 2022 played a role in this development.
Most people died in car accidents from January to June, namely 37, as announced by the Federal Roads Office (Astra). That is ten more than in the same period last year.
23 people died in motorcycle accidents, four more than in the previous year. Pedestrians lost their lives in 17, compared to 15 in the same period last year. With an e-bike, 15 people died, six more than a year ago. And among cyclists there were nine, one more than in 2021.
The number of seriously injured people also increased significantly compared to the same period of the previous year. From January to June there were 1746 people, 37 more than a year ago. Motorcyclists were hit the hardest with 466 serious injuries. That is the same number as in the same period last year.
346 car occupants were seriously injured in road accidents, 53 more than last year. The Astra observed a decrease among 18 to 34 year olds, but an increase among people aged 55 and over. Excessive speed is still the main cause of serious car accidents.
